A head injury can impact sleep even if you do not realize that you have an injury. You may be unable to fall asleep at night, frequently wake up during the night or sleep more than usual.
Emotional and cognitive symptoms
Mood symptoms of a head injury often go unnoticed. A TBI can cause anxiety, nervousness, elevated emotions, mood swings, unexplained sadness and irritability.
An impact to the head may also affect thinking, memory and other aspects of cognition. You might have trouble remembering new information, concentrating, or thinking clearly. Some people describe it as a “fuzzy” feeling in the brain.
Physical symptoms
Not all TBI cases have physical symptoms, which is partially why this type of injury can be so dangerous. You might experience exhaustion, fatigue, low energy, balance issues, light or sound sensitivity, dizziness, vomiting or nausea, and blurred vision.
See your doctor right away after an auto accident, especially if you suffer a blow to the head or neck. Even if you do not lose consciousness or have other physical signs of a TBI, you may have an underlying head injury that needs immediate medical attention.
