Understanding the consequences of speeding

Whether you regularly drive, ride a bicycle or walk, drivers who go over the speed limit pose a serious threat to your safety. Every year, many people die due to speeding and more victims sustain life-altering injuries that haunt them for the rest of their lives. Sadly, some drivers ignore the consequences of speeding or fail to recognize how dangerous this behavior is.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more than 9,300 people lost their lives due to traffic accidents involving speeding during 2018.

Why is speeding so dangerous?

The NHTSA also highlights some of the reasons why speeding is so dangerous. For example, if an accident takes place when a driver is traveling too fast, the likelihood of death and serious injury is greater. Moreover, speeding drivers have more difficulty responding to hazards on the road and maintaining control of their vehicle. When a driver speeds, it also takes more time for them to bring their vehicle to a stop and undermines the efficacy of a vehicle’s safety equipment.

Why do drivers go over the speed limit?

Drivers choose to disregard the speed limit for a host of reasons. Sometimes, they simply have no regard for laws or the well-being of others. On the other hand, some drivers become very aggressive due to problems in their personal or professional lives and take their anger out on the road. Traffic congestion causes some people to drive too fast and many people go over the speed limit because they worry about getting to work on time or handling other important commitments.
